RDC & Coronavirus (COVID-19)

RDC & Coronavirus (COVID-19)

May 21, 2020

To our guests, shareholders, neighbors, and other dear friends:

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Rockywold-Deephaven Camps will not open this season—a first in the Camp’s 123-year history.

The RDC Management Team and Board of Directors have deeply considered the multi-faceted impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 Camp season, doing our around-the-clock best to leave no health, safety, staffing, community, or financial stone unturned in our thinking.  Among these important facets is the deep emotional tie that so many of you have with RDC—something that’s impossible to model or value.  Given this rigor and the historic significance of the COVID-19 disease, we’re confident that this is the right decision for all those who love RDC, and for the health of the institution in the future.

If you have reservations for this season, you may receive your full deposit back.  Alternatively, in the spirit of planning for a brighter year ahead, you may choose to have RDC apply your deposit to a 2021 reservation and, in return, receive an RDC seniority point. You can learn more about this option here or contact us at rdc@rdcsquam.com.

A year without revenue will have a profound financial impact on RDC, not just this year but for several. We will be holding a virtual Special Shareholder Meeting in the coming weeks to address Camp’s financial future.  If you are a shareholder, please keep a close eye on your email and mailbox for more information. Your participation in this special meeting is critical.

I know many of you will have questions.  We have set up a dedicated section on the RDC website to address them as best we can. Please also feel free to contact me by email at: kathy@rdcsquam.com.

RDC has outlasted two World Wars, the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, and more—sustaining generations of families with an unwavering calm and peaceful hand. With your support and loyalty, it will also survive COVID-19 and we will gather again on the beautiful shores of Squam Lake.

With respect and gratitude,

Kathy Wheeler
RDC General Manager

Dear RDC Friends,

Since sending an email on Wednesday informing the RDC community of the decision to delay the potential opening of the Camps, we’ve received a number of questions about how we will handle the likes of social distancing, disinfection of surfaces, and other safety practices later in the season. Importantly, it has not yet been decided if RDC will open at all this season. If it is determined that it is safe to do so, we will follow the latest CDC and government guidelines for all aspects of operations.

As much as we would like to provide you with a full plan for the summer, we’re not in a position to do so at this point. Like businesses across the country, we’re monitoring the daily development of state and national guidelines and considering their implications for RDC. We promise to provide you with more definitive answers about the rest of the season as soon as we can.

Regards,

Kathy Wheeler

Dear RDC Friends,

It is our sincere hope that you and your families remain safe and healthy. The staff here at RDC is taking every precaution to do so while planning for the challenges of the coming season.

With national, regional, and local public health experts as our guides, RDC continues to assess the ever-changing circumstances presented by COVID-19. Though an exact picture of the full summer remains unclear from a national health standpoint, the Management team and Board of Directors have determined that opening our facilities in June presents too great of a risk for RDC, its guests, and staff. For that reason, we have decided to postpone opening Camp until July 4, 2020, the beginning of Week Four.

We understand and share the disappointment this news will bring to those who were planning to visit us in June. While delaying the start of the season was an extremely difficult decision, the wellbeing of all those who love RDC is our greatest concern and ultimate touchstone.

Anyone with reservations between June 1 and July 3 may receive their full deposit back. Alternatively, in the spirit of planning for a brighter year ahead, you may choose to have RDC apply your deposit to a 2021 reservation and, in return, receive an RDC seniority point. You can learn more about this option by clicking here.

To help our guests navigate uncertainty beyond June, we will also be allowing reservation cancellations up to May 31 with no penalty. Any further updates to the calendar or adjustments to Camp operations will be evaluated and relayed to you over the coming weeks. Please also check the RDC website periodically where we ’re posting updates as they occur.

We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding through this difficult time. Again, our guiding concern is your safety, that of our incredible staff, and, ultimately, of RDC itself.

Regards,

Dear RDC Friends,

Though an idyllic escape from the real world for generations, Rockywold-Deephaven is not immune to real world challenges. Along with other communities and businesses across the country, RDC is actively planning for the possible continued spread of COVID-19 so we can best protect the health of our staff, guests, and Camp itself.

What the new coronavirus will bring in the coming months is unclear.  As such, with national, regional, and local public health experts as our guides—including the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NH Health and Human Services, New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association, and others—we’re planning for a variety of scenarios. Each one places health and safety above all else.

We understand the unease that comes with uncertainty so we have updated our cancellation policy to allow cancellations up to May 31 with no penalty.  We will take further review of our additional cancellation policies in the coming weeks and are continuing to develop policies for the 2020 season.  Please know that both the staff and board of directors have the situation in sharp focus, and will keep you updated regularly on the RDC website as plans unfold.

We hope you and your family are healthy, and that we see you up at the lake soon.

Regards,

Kathy Wheeler
