For approximately 100 years, Rockywold-Deephaven Camps has harvested ice from Squam Lake. The ice blocks are 16" x 19" x ice depth, which is usually between 12" and 18". The blocks weigh between 120 and 160 pounds each and are stored in two ice houses, one in Rockywold and one in Deephaven. The ice is perfectly insulated by sawdust (enabling it to stay frozen until after the last RDC guest leaves in Septemeber) and is delivered to traditional ice boxes in each cottage. RDC stores approximately 1400 blocks in each ice house for a total ice harvest of 200 tons!
The RDC ice harvest typically takes place in mid-January, but due to warm weather this winter, the harvest took place from January 29th to February 2nd at Squaw Cove in Sandwich.
