Ice Harvest Update: Even before winter officially begins, ice is forming quickly in the coves on Big Squam Lake. When Jon Spence measured the thickness of the ice today, in the two locations where we harvest ice, we were surprised to learn that the Deep End area already had 4 inches of ice and Squaw Cove had 8 inches! The extended forecast is calling for a bit of a warming trend, but the temperatures still look cool enough to make ice. Given this scenario, it is possible that in early January Squaw Cove could reach the required 12 inch thickness needed to safely begin the ice harvest. We will monitor the conditions regularly from now until we start the operation and keep you posted as we learn more.
